Zoning without walls

01The vision

The hosts had been to a hundred weddings where everyone left after the food. They asked for the opposite.

02The problem

Lounge furniture placed against walls turns a marquee into a waiting room.

03The resolution

Nineteen islands of four to six seats, floated away from the walls, each with its own light source and low table.

The concept

Drawing room, floated — warm, low and grouped.

People stay where they can hear each other and see each other's faces.

Behind the scenes

Inventory prep

Every piece cleaned, repaired and finished in the workshop the week before.

Zoning

Groups walked and re-spaced on site until the routes between them felt right.

Midnight refresh

Table florals and candles replaced at twelve without interrupting a conversation.

Nobody left after dinner. That has never happened at a family wedding of ours, and it was entirely down to how the lounge was arranged.
